from
the pRESIDENT:
Our mission is to unite all members of the
American
Psychological Association who are interested in
the prevention and rehabilitation of disability and
chronic illness, and to reach out to other professionals,
organizations, and individuals with similar interests.
Rehabilitation Psychologists are committed to the
health and welfare, independence and choice, functional
abilities, and social participation of people with
disabilities and chronic illness, and those around
them. Although many aspects of disability and chronic
health conditions may be viewed as negative, Rehabilitation
Psychology focuses on hope, life, and celebration,
even in the face of true adversity.
The broad field of Rehabilitation Psychology includes
clinical practice, rehabilitation program development
and administration, research, teaching, public education
and development of policies for injury prevention
and health promotion, and advocacy for persons with
disabilities and chronic health conditions. Since
disability is always a function of a person-environment
interaction, consideration is given to the network
of biological, psychological, social, cultural, physical,
and political environments, and to the means of addressing
barriers in these areas.
The Division welcomes you to this talented and energetic
group of individuals committed to improving the world
in which we live. If you have any questions, please
contact me or another member of the Division. I can
be reached at wstiers1@jhmi.edu.
