Deafness

The Special Interest Group on Deafness (SIGD) welcomes all psychologists and related professionals who are interested in providing services to the deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind populations.

ACTIVITIES & ANNOUNCEMENTS

We currently have an active listserv where professionals can seek professional consultation, networking, and resource sharing.

The SIGD recently released our inaugural SIGD newsletter. We also just co-hosted, along with the Department of Psychology at Gallaudet University, a webinar on Telepsychology Practice with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Clients. Stay tuned for an announcement regarding the next webinar, scheduled for Spring 2021.

SIGD hosts a social hour during each APA convention and presents the Larry Stewart Award biennially during the Division 22 award ceremony. Details regarding the SIGD social hour at the 2021 APA convention are forthcoming.

The Larry G. Stewart award is presented biennially to a psychologist who exemplifies the ideals and values, and professional contributions to research, theory or practice, that are consistent with Dr. Stewart's conviction that all people share a common psychology and humanity whether they are hearing, hard-of-hearing, or deaf. The 2020 Larry Steward Award was presented to Dr. Deb Guthmann. Past award recipients are listed here. This award will be offered again in 2022.
