Chapter 11. Assistive Technology and Retraining
Under the Rehabilitation Act
Overview
Psychologists working in the field of physical
rehabilitation in the 21st century will have
a role that is very different from that of rehabilitation
psychologists in the past 25 years. This role
will be redefined and expanded to include educator,
coach, advocate, advisor, and facilitator. To
meet these new role requirements, psychologists
will need training in multiculturalism, current
legislative and legal issues relating to disability,
skills training, life span planning, and enhanced
communications skills. Knowledge of all levels
of AT will be vital, as will the skills needed
to fully integrate AT into the rehabilitation
process. It is hoped that Title III funding
and specialty certification requirements will
allow psychologists to meet these requirements.
